The shift just never ends, does it?
Weary wage-slave Randal is back, and with all his convenience store cronies, in “Clerks III,” the latest in Kevin Smith’s ongoing Quick Stop saga. The trailer, which dropped today (watch below), features fan-friendly glimpses of original stars Jeff Anderson, Brian O’Halloran, Jason Mewes and, of course, Smith as Silent Bob.
A hint to the plot, too, which has Randal — like Smith himself — surviving a life-threatening, life-altering medical emergency. Shocked out of his usual unhappy rut, he’s determined to become a filmmaker — something which gives Smith an excuse to load up on cameos from Sarah Michelle Gellar, Justin Long, Ben Affleck and more. “Clerks II” star Rosario Dawson shows up as well.
“In the story this time, I give Randal the heart attack that almost killed me,” Smith explained on Instagram. “But rather than succumb to the reality of middle age, Randal rages against the dying light by telling the story of his life in an indie film he shoots with his fellow clerks at Quick Stop! 27 years ago, I made a movie about Dante and Randal that made my dreams come true and changed my life — so now I get to return the favor!”
Smith, who first broke with traditional distribution methods with his horror film “Red State,” is taking a similarly independent road this time. After a New Jersey premiere scheduled for the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank on Sept. 4, the Lionsgate film will appear in regular theaters on September 13 and 15, as a Fathom Events presentation. Then Smith will take it on a “Clerks III Convenience Tour” roadshow, featuring personal appearances — and, no doubt, lots of happy ViewAskewniverse fans.
