Free shows are part of the Montclair Jazz Festival’s Community Concert Series

Bassist Christian McBride will take part in many events of the Montclair Jazz Festival’s Community Concert Series.

The Montclair Jazz Festival takes place Aug. 13 in Nishuane Park with A Christian McBride Situation, Dee Dee Bridgewater, the George Coleman Organ Quartet and others. But every weekday in August, through Aug. 12, a sort of pre-festival is taking place, with free concerts.

Shows in the Community Concert Series, which is part of Jazz House Kids’ Jazz House Summer Workshop, will take from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. Most will be at the Leshowitz Recital Hall at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, though some may move to the university’s nearby Kasser Amphitheatre, weather permitting.

Aug. 2: Jazz House Summer Workshop faculty intro concert
Aug. 3: Louis Hayes, drums, featuring Christian McBride, bass
Aug. 4: Ingrid Jensen, trumpet, featuring Christian McBride
Aug. 5: Faculty collective
Aug. 8: Jazz House alumni/teaching assistant concert
Aug. 9: Christian McBride symposium
Aug. 10: Billy Hart, drums; Dave Stryker, guitar; Harold Maybern, piano; Christian McBride, bass
Aug. 11: Dee Dee Bridgewater, featuring Christian McBride
Aug. 12: Student composition and student specialty ensemble performances/summer workshop award program

There will also be evening concerts at 6:30, Aug. 10-11, with artists TBA.
