Gary Frost pays tribute to The Boss in roundabout way in ‘Shutup Springsteen’ single

In 2017 and 2018, I did a two-part series on songs about Bruce Springsteen — 40 songs in which he’s the subject, or at least mentioned in the lyrics, the most famous one undoubtedly being Eric Church’s “Springsteen.” Here are links to Part 1 and Part 2.

And now here is another one: “Shutup Springsteen,” a country ballad by Colts Neck’s Gary Frost. You can watch the video for it below.

Don’t be misled by the title. Frost has nothing against Springsteen himself. It’s just that he’s tortured by thoughts of an ex-girlfriend, and when he hears Springsteen, he always thinks of her, so Springsteen songs have become difficult for him to listen to.

Frost also fills the verses with references to Springsteen songs (e.g., “I thought that I’d be tougher than the rest/And I could get you off of my chest/But maybe I’ve just got a hungry heart”).

“Springsteen music has always been a big part of my life and for me like so many other people, it definitely evokes many emotions,” said Frost. “When I was writing the song I was thinking particularly about his love songs and what special significance they might have to people in relationships. Then I asked myself a question … what does the song mean when the relationship is over?

“Most people can relate to having a song that they consider ‘our song.’ The song starts playing, you immediately start smiling and thinking of your special someone, maybe you are singing along and it’s such a great feeling. Unfortunately after a breakup the same song still stirs up feelings and not the good kind.”

Frost will open for Michael Ray at Jenks in Point Pleasant Beach, July 6; visit jenksclub.com. For more on him, visit garyfrostcountry.com.
