GRACE PETTIS

Singer-songwriter Grace Pettis will perform a solo set at 503 Social Club in Hoboken, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Pettis — who was raised in Alabama and Austin and is now based in Nashville — will perform material from her latest album, Down to the Letter (MPress Records), which revolves around the theme of surviving heartbreak and finding renewal.

The daughter of singer-songwriter Pierce Pettis, she carries on the tradition of performing resonant songs. Some of her material has been recorded by other performers, including the Grammy-nominated blues artist Ruthie Foster; she co-wrote three songs on Foster’s 2022 album Healing Time.

Below you can see her video of “Joy,” a bluesy hopeful and grateful song from Down to the Letter. Her velvety voice soars and feels like a glorious awakening from a period of slumber and grief.

You can also see, below, the video of her upbeat and fiery single “I Take Care of Me Now.”

Elena Skye and Boo Reiners of The Demolition String Band.

The Demolition String Band — featuring Elena Skye (vocals, guitar and mandolin), Boo Reiners (vocals, guitar and banjo) and Nick Reeb (fiddle) — will open this show.

Known for their superb bluegrass music, the band will focus on original material, but they will “throw in a few Ola Belle Reed songs in there from our Ola Belle Reed tribute album,” said Skye, adding that “the night will be kind of a mix of what we do with our electric band and our acoustic/bluegrass-styled band.”

Since opening in late 2023, The 503 Social Club has presented shows by artists such as Jill Sobule, Freedy Johnston, Jon Langford and Sally Timms, Ivan Julian, Karyn Kuhl and others. Upcoming shows will include Syd Straw on Sept. 21 and Richard Lloyd on Oct. 6.
