Hoboken salutes hometown hero Frank Sinatra with centennial events

The city of Hoboken is planning a big concert at the Stevens Institute of Technology on Dec. 12 (lineup TBA), the day that is the 100th anniversary of native son Frank Sinatra’s birth. But its Sinatra Centennial events start next week, and continue through much of the summer.

June 10 at 9 p.m., Sinatra’s 1960 movie, “Ocean’s 11,” will be show at Pier A Park as part of the city’s free Movies Under the Stars series. Later in the summer, on July 15, Movies Under the Star will screen another Sinatra movie, “The Manchurian Candidate.”

June 11 at Sinatra Park, the “Sinatra Idol” singing competition will take place, with no admission charge. “Sinatra Idol” contestants will also perform at the Sounds of Sinatra Cabaret at Leo’s Grandezvous, 200 Grand St., June 13 at 10:30 p.m. (tickets for the Cabaret are $25).

The Cabaret is the only ticketed event of the Sounds of Sinatra Weekend, which will feature free performances at more than 20 locations around town, throughout the days and nights of June 12 and 13, followed by a free concert by the Swingadelic Big Band, with past “Sinatra Idol” winners, at Sinatra Park, June 14 at 6 p.m.

Also, Sinatra tribute band Skanatra, which performs ska versions of the Sinatra repertoire, will reunite for a show at Sinatra Park, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m.
