CARLOS VARELA
Jackson Browne has been added to the lineup of the politically outspoken Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela’s Nov. 21 concert at The Victoria Theater at NJPAC in Newark. The show, which is part of this year’s TD James Moody Jazz Festival, is now being billed as Carlos Varela (with Jackson Browne and Diana Fuentes), plus poet Rodrigo Toscano opening. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com.
In a press release, Browne is described as “A longtime friend and fan of Carlos Varela.”
Browne translated and covered Varela’s “Muros y Puertas” as “Walls and Doors” on his 2014 album Standing in the Breach, with Varela playing guitar and singing backing vocals. Browne sings in this song:
It’s how it’s always been
And I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
Let me say that again
Because I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
