Jason Didner
Inspired by Warren Zanes’ book “Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska” and the upcoming movie based on it, as well as the way that Springsteen’s personal Nebraska-era story resonates with incidents in his own life, Montclair-based singer-songwriter Jason Didner has written and recorded a song, “Deliver Me From Nowhere.” You can watch him performing it on the embedded YouTube video below.
The song is written from the point of view of Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau, who, as the book and movie show, helped Springsteen recover from depression. But it really could anyone trying to help a friend who has “been to a dark place,” as Didner sings. “I can’t fix you/But we can get you help/I’ll be here/While you get right with yourself.”
Didner calls the song “an affirmation of a cry for help.”
Here are the complete lyrics; the video is below them. For more on Didner, visit jasondidner.com.
You’ve been to a dark place lately
One you seem to know innately
I can’t fix you
But we can get you help
I’ll be here
While you get right with yourself
You’re running scared and lonely
You’re not the one and only
One around to need a helping hand
To find your way
Back on the road to solid land
I hear loud and clear
Your cry of despair
Deliver me from nowhere
I will stand with you
Through your own repair
And cheer you getting somewhere
Front row seat as you
Deliver you from nowhere
You curse yourself at midnight
Like you don’t deserve the spotlight
Though you don’t feel
Much like that superstar
You have earned
That part of who you are
You gotta let somebody show you
How to trust the floor below you
‘Til you do,
I’m here, never to leave
You’ve long been
My reason to believe
I hear loud and clear
Your cry of despair
Deliver me from nowhere
I will stand with you
Through your own repair
And cheer you getting somewhere
Front row seat as you
Deliver you from nowhere
You’ve built some walls around you
Love can lift you up and ground you
There’s a life
The one you’re waiting for
You will find
These things outside your door
Like this town beside the ocean
Look at how you’ve set in motion
A hope, a promise
That is true and right
You will rise
To meet the morning light
I hear loud and clear
Your cry of despair
Deliver me from nowhere
I will stand with you
Through your own repair
And cheer you getting somewhere
Front row seat as you
Deliver you from nowhere
