The Montclair Jazz Festival has released the schedule for its outdoor Downtown Jamboree, taking place on Aug. 15 at Lackawanna Station, at Bloomfield Avenue and Grove Street.
With the country celebrating its 250th year, the festival will feature the music of some of the major cities in American jazz history.
“The programming at this year’s festival gave us the opportunity to celebrate not only extraordinary artists, but the communities that have shaped America’s musical identity,” said the festival’s artistic director, Christian McBride, in a press release. “Every performance reflects a different chapter in jazz’s ongoing story, honoring the regional sounds, traditions, and innovators that continue to keep this music vibrant. It’s a lineup that reminds us jazz has always been a conversation between places, people, and generations.”
Here is the schedule:
11 a.m.: Second line march from Church and Park streets to the festival site, featuring The Gotham Kings
Main Stage
Noon: Spanish Harlem Orchestra (honoring New York)
1:30 p.m.: Dianne Reeves (honoring Detroit)
3 p.m.: Take Me to the River All Stars featuring Cyril Neville, Omari Neville, Ian Neville and Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr.(honoring New Orleans)
5 p.m.: Patrice Rushen (honoring Los Angeles)
7 p.m.: Christian McBride Big Band featuring Bilal (honoring Philadelphia)
Jazz House Stage
Noon-8 p.m.: Jazz House Collective (honoring Miles Davis and John Coltrane); Jazz House All Stars; students and ensembles from the Jazz House Summer Workshop; Joel Ross’ Good Vibes
Black Party on Lackawanna Plaza
8-10 p.m.: DJ Prince Hakim
Post Party at Egan & Songs
9-11 p.m.: Essex Funk Collective
The festival is produced by the Montclair-based educational organization, Jazz House Kids. The Take Me to the River New Orleans All-Stars will be underwritten by The Gia Maione Prima Foundation, and The Block Party will be presented by United Airlines.
There is no admission charge, though attendees (except for children younger than 10, accompanied by an adult) must register for a Jam Pass, which has a “Pay What You Wish” option.
