Emily Mann’s new play about Gloria Steinem will be part of 2019-20 McCarter season

“Gloria: A Life,” a new play about feminist activist and journalist Gloria Steinem that is current running off-Broadway, will kick off the 2019-20 theater series at the McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton. The play was written by McCarter artistic director Emily Mann, who will leave the position. which she has held since 1990, at the end of the season. She will be restaging it for the McCarter, with direction by Diane Paulus.

“Gloria: A Life” will be presented from Sept. 6 to Oct. 6. Other season offerings will include:

“Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein,” Oct. 15-Nov. 3.
“Goodnight Nobody,” a world premiere, written by Rachel Bonds, Jan. 10-Feb. 9
“Sleuth,” March 10-29, 2020
“The Refuge Plays,” a world premiere, written by Nathan Alan Davis, May 8-June 7, 2020

Though it is not officially part of the theater series, the McCarter will also present its annual production of “Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol,” Dec. 10-29.

“Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein,” “Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol” and “Sleuth” will be presented in McCarter’s Matthews Theatre. “Gloria: A Life,” “Goodnight Nobody” and “The Refuge Plays” will be in the smaller Berlind Theatre.

The theater has also announced its Music, Dance and Signature Series. Here are the shows, which will take place at the Matthews Theatre, unless otherwise noted.

Yuja Wang will perform at the McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton on Feb. 12.

Oct. 21: Christian Tetzlaff, violin, and Lars Vogt, piano. Program includes sonatas by Beethoven, Franck, and Shostakovich. Richardson Auditorium.
Nov. 21: National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. Volodymyr Sirenko, conductor. Program includes Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 (with pianist Olga Kern) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.
Dec. 13: The Tallis Scholars. Holiday show featuring a cappella Renaissance sacred music. Richardson Auditorium.
Feb. 12:
Yuja Wang, piano. Program features works by Debussy, Schoenberg, and Brahms.
May 5, 2020: Opera-in-Concert: Handel’s Rodelinda. Harry Bicket, conductor. Singers include countertenors Anthony Roth Costanzo and Iestyn Davies.
May 13, 2020: Igor Levit, piano. All-Beethoven program including Sonatas No. 9, 10, 11, and 29 (the Hammerklavier).

DANCE

Oct. 16-17: Ailey II. Program includes Alvin Ailey’s “Revelations” and more. Berlind Theatre.
Feb. 8: Dance Theatre of Harlem
Feb. 16: National Ballet Theatre of Odessa: “Romeo & Juliet”

Catherine Russell will sing Billie Holiday songs at the McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton on Nov. 13-14.
