George Clinton and Nona Hendryx.

NJPAC will stream a conversation between legendary funk musician George Clinton and Nona Hendryx, best known as a member of Labelle, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. The stream, titled “Funk Wizdom and other Afrofunkafuturistic Tales,” is free; to register, visit bit.ly/3jlKyMe.

NJPAC describes the talk as “a no-holds-barred conversation about art, music, sex, hopes and dreams, life and afterlife. They’ll delve into Afrofuturism and Afropastism: from Sun Ra to Daniel Glover, The Invisible Man to Watchmen, Blaxploitation to Black Panther, Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Oprah Winfrey.”

Clinton, who has deep Jersey roots in Newark and Plainfield, is best known, of course, as the leader of the ground-breaking Parliament and Funkadelic groups. Hendryx, who grew up in Trenton, has had a long and productive solo career in addition to her work with Labelle, and has collaborated with artists ranging from Talking Heads to Keith Richards, Laurie Anderson, Afrika Bambaataa and Graham Parker.
