Richard Thompson will open for Bonnie Raitt at NJPAC in Newark, Aug. 13.

Those attending Bonnie Raitt’s Aug. 13 concert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark will get a nice bonus: an opening set by Richard Thompson.

The veteran singer-songwriter-guitarist will perform in his electric trio format, featuring Taras Prodaniuk on bass and Michael Jerome on drums.

Thompson will open all the shows on the August/September leg of Raitt’s Dig in Deep Tour. Tickets for NJPAC are still available; visit ticketmaster.com.

Thompson will also perform, with backing by a string orchestra, at Le Poisson Rouge in New York, June 9; visit lpr.com.

Raitt’s and Thompson’s paths have crossed many times over the years. He played on her 1991 album, Luck of the Draw, and she has covered his songs “Dimming of the Day” and “When the Spell Is Broken.”

Here are videos of Raitt singing “Dimming of the Day,” with Thompson accompanying her on guitar and backing vocals, and of Raitt’s studio recording of “When the Spell Is Broken.”
