Sally Struthers will host an Aug. 2 benefit concert for the new Asbury Park Theater Company at The Asbury hotel. The event — titled “A Little Musical Night” and featuring Broadway veterans Carter Calvert (“It Ain’t Nothin’ but the Blues”) and Jim Newman (“Hands on a Hardbody,” “Curtains”), as well as James Edward Alexander — will take place at 8 p.m. in the hotel’s ballroom.

The new theater company does not have any productions currently scheduled but intends to produce everything “[f]rom new works, reimagined classics to provocative high-energy musical performances,” according to its web site.

Its producing artistic director is William Whitefield, former executive director at the Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manasquan, and its managing director is Bob Angelini, founding board president and former artistic director at Asbury Park’s ReVision Theatre.

In a press release, Whitefield said the theater’s purpose will be “to create powerful, invigorating and transformative professional theater that inspires, celebrates and enriches our community.”

Struthers, of course, is best known as a television actress, but has extensive experience in theater, too.
