Savion Glover to receive honorary doctorate from Montclair State University

Savion Glover will receive an honorary doctorate from Montclair State University, May 25.

Newark-born dancer, choreographer and educator Savion Glover will receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree at the undergraduate commencement ceremony at Montclair State University, May 25.

Fans who won’t be able to be there can watch online at montclair.edu/webcast.

The 43-year-old Tony winner is expected to receive his award, and speak, at about 11 a.m. Newark mayor Ras Baraka will receive an honorary doctorate and speak at approximately 9:30 a.m.

“Savion Glover has captivated audiences of all ages on both stage and screen for nearly four decades, but it is his work inspiring children that makes him a wonderful example for our graduates,” said Montclair State president Susan A. Cole said, in a press release.

“Regardless of one’s professional discipline, empowering the next generation should be a goal for each of Montclair State University’s students, and Mr. Glover has embodied this commitment throughout his decorated and accomplished career.”
