Snarky Puppy, Esperanza Spalding to be among acts at Basie Summer Jazz Fest

by JAY LUSTIG

Snarky Puppy is one of the co-headliners of this year’s Basie Summer Jazz Fest in Red Bank.

The Basie Summer Jazz Fest — named for the great Red Bank native Count Basie and hosted by Red Bank’s Count Basie Theatre — has announced its 2018 schedule. Michael Franks, Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin, the Bob James Trio and Lizz Wright will perform June 2, followed by Snarky Puppy, Esperanza Spalding and Moonchild, June 3.

While Ritenour and Grusin are booked as a duo, and James will be performing with his own group, Ritenour and James have quite a bit of history together, as co-founders of the group Fourplay. And Snarky Puppy and Spalding have performed together at least once (see video below).

This will be the festival’s second year. Last year’s inaugural fest featured Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, BĂ©la Fleck and others.

Tickets go on sale March 2 at noon; visit TheBASIE.org.

Here are the set times:

June 2:
4 p.m.: Lizz Wright
5:30 p.m.: Bob James Trio
8 p.m.: Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin
9:45 p.m.: Michael Franks

June 3:
6:30 p.m.: Moonchild
7:45 p.m.: Esperanza Spalding
9:30 p.m.: Snarky Puppy

It would be nice if, in memory of Count Basie, there were at least one mainstream jazz act.

How are Michael Franks, Lee Ritenour and / or Esperanza Spalding not mainstream jazz acts? It has to be Kenny G for you to think it’s legit?
