Bruce Springsteen has released the sixth song from his upcoming Tracks II: The Lost Albums boxed set: “Sunday Love,” from his Twilight Hours album.
It’s a moody, elegant ballad with a lush, orchestral arrangement — somewhat reminiscent, overall, of Burt Bacharach.
According to a press release, Twilight Hours was written “in tandem” with Springsteen’s 2019 Western Stars album, “over the course of a decade.” Springsteen has called the album a collection of “romantic, lost-in-the-city songs.”
Indeed, the narrator of “Sunday Love” sings of the drudgery of his white-collar work life, and weekends that just bring “another lonely night on the town.”
“I never had a Sunday love, flowers and champagne/I never had a Sunday love, long walks in the rain,” he sings, in the chorus.
The track features Springsteen on guitar, keyboards and percussion, in addition to Patti Scialfa, Soozie Tyrell and Lisa Lowell on backing vocals; Max Weinberg on drums; Scott Tibbs on keyboards; Kaveh Rastegar on bass; and producer Ron Aniello on guitar, percussion and piano.
My previous favorite of the already released songs from Tracks II was “Repo Man,” but I think “Sunday Love” tops it.
Here it is:
The boxed set’s first single, “Rain in the River,” was released on April 3. Its second, “Blind Spot,” came out on April 17; its third, “Faithless,” on May 1; its fourth, “Repo Man,” on May 14; and its fifth, “Adelita,” on May 29.
The complete boxed set will be released on June 27. For information, visit lostalbums.net.
Springsteen’s Tracks, a four-CD boxed set released in 1998, includes rarities and previously unreleased material recorded between 1972 and 1998.
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band are currently touring in Europe, with their next show taking place at Airport Letnany in Prague, June 15.
