MARK R. SULLIVAN FOR THE COUNT BASIE THEATRE

Robin Wilson of The Gin Blossoms sang with surviving members of The Smithereens at The Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, Jan. 13.

As previously announced, surviving members of The Smithereens will perform as The Smithereens, with Robin Wilson of Gin Blossoms handling lead vocals, as the opening act for a concert by Dave Davies of The Kinks in Waukegan, Ill., April 19.

Now, a second, similar appearance has been announced. Wilson will join Smithereens Jim Babjak (guitar) and Dennis Diken (drums), as well as bassist Keith Hartel, for what is being billed as “An Intimate Evening of Music” in the auditorium of Central High School in Valley Stream, Long Island, N.Y., April 28. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the school’s theater group and parent-teacher-student association.

In Waukegan, original Smithereens bassist Mike Mesaros will join Wilson, Babjak and Diken.

Smithereens frontman Pat DiNizio died on Dec. 12. At a Jan. 13 tribute to him at the Count Theatre in Red Bank, Wilson sang four songs — more than any other guest artist — with Diken, Babjak and Mesaros.
