In honor of Montclair resident Yogi Berra, who turns 90 today, today’s selection for the 350 Jersey Songs series is a very clever talking blues by veteran singer-songwriter John McCutcheon, inspired by some of the baseball great’s most famous “Yogiisms.” Check it out below.
Berra lived in Montclair for many years, though he is no longer there. The baseball stadium at Montclair State University is named after him, and the campus also houses the Yogi Berri Museum and Learning Center.
McCutcheon included the song on his 2008 album Sermon on the Mound, which is composed entirely of baseball-related songs.
Happy birthday Yogi!
New Jersey celebrated its 350th birthday last year. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we are marking the occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, for almost a year — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. We started in September 2014, and will keep going until late in the summer.
If you would like to suggest any songs to be included, please let me know in the comments section underneath the video. And if you want to see the entire list, either alphabetically or in the order the songs were selected, click here.
