As I’ve mentioned in another 350 Jersey Songs selection or two this week, the Izod Center in East Rutherford will present its last concert on Sunday. Here’s another very memorable moment from the arena’s history.
“Krist and I had a very special anniversary this week,” Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl told the Izod crowd on Sept. 26, 2011. Krist is Krist Novoselic, his former Nirvana bandmate, and the event he was referring to was the 20th anniversary of the release of Nirvana’s classic Nevermind album (on Sept. 24, 1991). He then played a song with Novoselic, though it was not a Nevermind song: It was “These Days,” from the 2011 Foo Fighters album Wasting Light (Grohl called it “my favorite song I ever wrote”). And Novoselic wasn’t playing his usual Nirvana instrument, bass, but instead played accordion. (Grohl joked that “Krist Novoselic is like the Eddie Van Halen of accordion”).
Still, it was a great moment; Grohl and Novoselic have rarely been onstage together since Kurt Cobain’s 1994 death. Check it out below.
New Jersey celebrated its 350th birthday in 2014. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we marked the occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, from September 2014 to September 2015 — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. To see the entire list, click here.
