As in the original film, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer will play members of the hilariously clueless heavy metal band, and Rob Reiner will direct. Fran Drescher and Paul Shaffer will be among the returning cast members, and Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Questlove of The Roots, Lars Ulrich of Metallica, and Chad Smith of The Red Hot Chili Peppers will make cameos.
Reiner has said that the premise of the sequel is that the band has broken up, but after their manager died, his widow “inherited a contract that said Spinal Tap owed them one more concert. She was basically going to sue them if they didn’t. All these years and a lot of bad blood we’ll get into, and they’re thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert.”
