More than 250 interviews, in 20 countries, were conducted for “Tramps like Us,” a new documentary about Bruce Springsteen’s fans. It “explores how Bruce Springsteen’s music, message and presence have shaped lives and created lifelong connections,” said director David Barry, in a press release. “It’s a tribute to the extraordinary relationship between Bruce, his music and his fans.”
The film will have its world premiere Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at The Pollak Theater at Monmouth University in West Long Branch. The university’s Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music and the Springsteen fan group Spring-Nuts will co-sponsor the screening.
Tickets will go on sale June 4 at 10 a.m.; visit springsteenarchives.org.
More than 350 supporters contributed more than $50,000 to a crowdfunding campaign that made the film possible. You can watch a trailer for the film below.
The screening will also serve as the culminating event of Spring-Nuts’ seventh annual Seaside Serenade weekend in Asbury Park, which will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the organization, and also include a gala at The Stone Pony, Aug. 24 from noon to 5 p.m.
“We could not have asked for a better way to cap off Serenade weekend than to watch this mind-blowing collection of personal and profound Springsteen fans’ stories together with all our fellow Spring-Nuts at Monmouth University,” said Spring-Nuts co-founders Howie and Julie Chaz, in the press release. “David Barry has done an incredible job capturing Bruce’s legacy and deep connection with his fans. This is a must-see for any Springsteen fan.”
Proceeds from the “Tramps Like Us” screening and the Seaside Serenade will go to the Light of Day Foundation, which funds research and support in the fight against Parkinson’s disease and related illnesses; and TeachRock, the educational organization founded by Stevie Van Zandt.
