A growing number of theaters around the world — the total is now more than 180 — will show the movie “1984” on April 4. And at least two of them will be in New Jersey.

The Landmark Loew’s Jersey theater in Jersey City will show the 1984 movie (adapted from George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four”) at 7:30 p.m., with a discussion following. The movie is being presented in partnership with the Jersey City Free Public Library. Admission is $10 ($5 for seniors and students) with proceeds going to the Jersey City Free Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Loew’s. The first 100 attendees will be given a copy of the book.

The movie will also be presented by The Highland Park Outdoor Movie Theatre at Pino’s Gift Basket Shoppe and Wine Cellar in Highland Park, at 7 p.m. Admission is $5, to offset the cost of the movie license; any additional proceeds will go to the Highland Park Outdoor Movie Theater.

April 4 was chosen as the day for the screenings because that’s the day when the action in the novel starts.

(3/30 Update: The Summit Film Society will also show the movie, April 5 at 7 p.m. at MONDO Summit. There will be no admission charge, but suggested donations of $10 for adults, $5 for students and any additional donations will go to the National Endowment for the Arts.)

The United States of Cinema organization is behind this effort. According to a message on its web site, “Orwell’s portrait of a government that manufactures their own facts, demands total obedience, and demonizes foreign enemies, has never been timelier. The endeavor encourages theaters to take a stand for our most basic values: freedom of speech, respect for our fellow human beings, and the simple truth that there are no such things as ‘alternative facts.’ ”

too bad they did not sponsor 1984 showings under Obama as he sure was a dictator, invading Lybia, Syria, using IRS to go after political enemies, spying on everyone (Snowden), giving full auto weapons to Mexican gangs under Fast and Furious project, etc etc etc…
