A guide to notable arts events taking place in New Jersey, through May 1:

The next installment ofMotion: New Dance Works, a series presented by New Brunswick-basedcoLAB Arts that showcases young choreographers, will take place at the Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick, April 28 at 7 p.m. New works byHillary Pearson,Joe Monteleone, Robert MarkDanceandStephanie Nerbakwill be featured. The fifth annual Montclair Film Festival lasts from April 29 to May 8, with more than 150 film screenings and special events scheduled all around Montclair. Among those who will be appearing at the events areRob Reiner, Stephen Colbert, D.A. Pennebaker, Ras Baraka, Patrick Wilson, Margo Martindale, Richard Curtis and Gilbert Gottfried.

• Dino Day, taking place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 30 at the Morris Museum in Morris Township, features family activities such as a fossil dig, a dinosaur scavenger hunt, talks bypaleontology experts, and “HadrosaurusRocks” music shows by Jason Didner and the Jungle Gym Jam.

•One of the mainstays of the New Orleans music scene,The Subdudes, will perform at the historic and atmospheric Mount Tabor Tabernacle in Parsippany, April 30 at 7 p.m., with singer-songwriter Vance Gilbert opening.

•Martin Short will be the featured performer of the 2016 Benefit Gala of the State Theatre in New Brunswick, April 30 at 6 p.m., in a show that will include segments featuring some of the characters he’s known for (includingEd Grimley and Jiminy Glick) plus film clips, songs and audience participation.

•Shen Yun, a New York-based company devoted to classical Chinese dance and music, performs at Prudential Hall at NJPAC in Newark, April 29 at 7 p.m. and April 30 and May 1 at 2 p.m.

Buena Vista Social Club memberJuan de Marcos and hisAfro-Cuban All Starsorchestra perform at the South Orange Performing Arts Center, April 30 at 8 p.m.

The Music Boxat Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City presents an evening with filmmaker Kevin Smith (“Clerks,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” “Jersey Girl”),April 30 at 8 p.m.

The annual Rutgers Daypresents a huge number of free educational, family and cultural activities, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Rutgers campuses in New Brunswick, Newark and Camden, with another free annual event, the New Jersey Folk Festival, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in New Brunswick.

Leon Russell, who headlined the fall Hoboken Arts and Music Festival in 2009, will return this year for the festival’s spring edition, May 1 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is no admission charge for this annual event.Other performers on the three stages that will be on Washington Street in downtown Hoboken (along with more than 300 art displays, food vendors and other attractions) will include Smokey’s Round-Up (featuring Smokey Hormel), The Amazing Incredibles, Tony Corrao (singing Frank Sinatra songs) and Emily & the Ideals. One of the stages will be devoted to children’s entertainment.
