For anyone who has a long-neglected trumpet — or any other instrument — taking up space in the attic, this is the perfect time to get rid of it. WQXR-FM (105.9 FM, wqxr.org) is launching, today, its second instrument drive, which lasts until April 17. It is intended to collect more than 6,000 instruments for distribution to New York and Newark public school music programs, as well as community music programs.
More than 3,000 instruments were collected in the first drive, in 2014.
There are drop-off locations throughout New York City, Westchester, Long Island and Northern New Jersey: The Garden State ones are in the Sam Ash music stores in Paramus, Edison and Springfield Township. But also, Uber will provide free pick-ups of donations from Manhattan and Northern New Jersey, April 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Uber riders can request a vehicle by entering the promo code GIVEMUSIC.
Don’t worry if the instruments are not in perfect condition. They will be assessed and, in some cases, refurbished, before distribution.
