In reaction to the death of Prince, The Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank has scheduled a free screening of his breakthrough 1984 movie, “Purple Rain,” April 24 at 8 p.m. There will be no admission charge, though tickets will be required; they can be obtained at the theater’s box office, during regular business hours, or online at

Attendees are asked to bring canned food items to be donated to Red Bank’s Lunch Break program.

For some, the screening could be something to do after the Red Bank International Beer, Wine and Food Festival, which takes place April 24 from noon to 7 p.m. in the White Street Parking lot. As part of this event, there will be music throughout the day by artists such as The Weeklings, Remember Jones, The Nerds, The Jazz Lobsters Big Band and Random Test.

Prince died April 21, at the age of 57.

The Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park will also present a free screening of “Purple Rain,” on May 20.
