The Crossroads Theatre Company will present Denzel Washington with its inaugural Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee Living Legends Award, Oct. 19 at the State Theatre in New Brunswick. The event will take place at 8:45 p.m. and feature performances by singer Gregory Porter and others to be named later.

Davis and Dee were actors and activists who were married to each other. They died in 2005 and 2014, respectively. Dee and Washington co-starred in the 2007 movie, “American Gangster,” with Dee receiving an Oscar nomination for her performance.

According to the web site,, the award was created “to recognize a prominent person(s) from the arts and entertainment community who emulates the activist voice, vision and value of its namesakes, Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee, and whose body of work illustrates best in class acting and portrayal of people, places and promise.”

Tickets are $175 to $350. Silver, gold and platinum passes — priced at $500, $1,000 and $7,500 (for a pair), respectively — also include admission to pre-show receptions. The platinum level passes also include an opportunity to meet Washington.
