“The Pinelands and the Vinelands/Seaside Heights, Margate/You can have Miami/I love the Garden State,” sings John Pizzarelli in “I Like Jersey Best,” the Joseph Cosgriff-written song he has made into an unofficial state anthem.
It’s a fun, bouncy song, mentioning everything from “Good ole’ Rutgers U” to the shoe stores on Route 22. And in concert, the jazz singer and guitarist often expands on it by singing in in the styles of other artists; the version below includes nods to Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, The Beach Boys, Billie Holiday and Mel Tormé.
No list of Jersey-related songs would be complete without it.
New Jersey celebrated its 350th birthday last year. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we are marking the occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, for almost a year — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. We started in September 2014, and will keep going until late in the summer.
If you would like to suggest any songs to be included, please let me know in the comments section underneath the video. And if you want to see the entire list, either alphabetically or in the order the songs were selected, click here.
