THE DOO WOP PROJECT

Kean University in Union will present, this month, its first cultural events for live audiences since the pandemic began. (With appropriate coronavirus safety precautions, of course.)

The Doo Wop Project will perform at Kean’s Alumni Stadium, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. (Rain date: Oct. 23.) The group includes veterans of Broadway shows such as “Jersey Boys,” “Motown the Musical,” “A Bronx Tale” and “Hairspray” and performs classic doo-wop songs as well as pop hits from the past and from current artists, sung in doo-wop style (see video below).

Also, the Acrobats of Cirque-Tacular will present a family-friendly show (see video below) at the stadium, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. (Rain date: Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.)

REMA WEBB

Meanwhile, Kean’s Premiere Stages program will return to live action with a one-woman play, “Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It!” It will be presented in a tent on the grounds of the Liberty Hall Museum, Oct. 15-16 at 7 p.m., Oct. 17 at 3 and 6 p.m. and Oct. 18 at 3 p.m.

There will be question-and-answer sessions following the matinee performances on Oct. 17 and 18.

Hamer was a major figure in the Civil Rights Movement of the ’50s and ’60s and will be played by Rema Webb, who has performed in Broadway shows such as “The Lion King,” “The Color Purple” and “The Book of Mormon.”

Marshall Jones III, longtime producing artistic director of the Crossroads Theatre Company in New Brunswick, will direct the hour-long show, which was adapted by Cheryl L. West from her play, “Fannie.”
