Madison Mostly Dance Festival will offer a daily dose of dance

The Film Society of Summit will screen “Call Me Dancer,” featuring Manish Chauhan, at the Madison Mostly Dance Festival.

The Madison Community Arts Center will host The Madison Mostly Dance Festival from April 25 to May 5, with a variety of daily offerings encompassing dance, dance-and-music and dance-and-film, and more. (As the festival’s name implies, there are a couple of non-dance events in there, too.)

April 25-26 at 7:30 p.m. and April 27 at 2 p.m.: “Collective Memory(ies): Drew University Dance Department’s Spring Concert.” Indoor and outdoor, student-choreographed pieces based on the theme of collective memories, presented under the direction of professor Kimani Fowlin.

April 27, 7:30 p.m.: “Call Me Dancer,” a documentary about Manish Chauhan, an aspiring young dancer from Mumbai, and his Israeli mentor (see trailer below), directed by Leslie Shampaine and Pip Gilmour. The screening will be presented by The Film Society of Summit, and will be followed by a discussion.

April 28, 4 p.m.: Concert by The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey, conducted by Robert W. Butts. “The New Contemporary” program includes Michael DeMaio’s Three Poems by Maya Angelou (featuring Timothy Maureen Cole, soprano; Nan Childress Orchard, piano; Michael DeMaio’s Along a Peaceful Path (featuring Alyson Whelan, violin, viola, cello; Nan Childress Orchard, piano; David Williams’ Monument (featuring Nan Childress Orchard, piano); David Williams’ Sacred Dances; and Robert W. Butts’ Selections from Vite senza tempo (featuring Timothy Maureen Cole, soprano; Dmitri Zigrino, tenor; Nan Childress Orchard, piano).

April 29, 7:30 p.m.: Works created and performed by individuals with disabilities from the Matheny School’s Arts Access Choreography Program.

AC LINCOLN

April 30, 7:30 p.m.: Clarinetist Dan Levinson’s jazz ensemble, featuring tap dancer AC Lincoln.

May 1, 7 p.m.: Swing dancing with dance instructor Nissreen Almazouni and the 19-piece Bottle Hill Big Band.

May 2, 7:30 p.m.: Indian classical dance, presented by the Kalagangothri Foundation.

May 3, 10 a.m.: “Move Human” master class presented by Charles Scheland, senior company member of Carolyn Dorfman Dance

May 3, 7:30 p.m.: Thomas Edison Film Festival presents “Dance on Screen” (short films).

May 4, 4 and 7:30 p.m.: “Behind Closed Doors,” presented by Extensions Dance Project.

May 5, 3 p.m.: Trombonist Mariel Bildsten, presented by New Jersey Jazz Society.
