No one can say for sure what the New Jersey performing arts scene will look like in 2021. But it’s not a good sign that the McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton has cancelled all performances through June.

The theater, located on the campus of Princeton University, has a well established theater series — for which it won the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 1994 — and regularly presents shows by nationally known music and dance performers, as well as family entertainment and more.

In an email blast, the theater said that the decision was made “in light of current public health recommendations” and added: “We are continuing our conversations with artists — they are as excited as we are to resume performing in-person for you. We are also working to unveil a touchless ticketing experience so that you won’t have to worry about the handling of your credit card or tickets. Top-level cleanliness, smart social distancing, and the exquisite joy of live performance will all be ready when government guidelines change.”

Like other theaters, the McCarter is concentrating on online offerings while live events remain impossible. Visit mccarter.org/tickets-events/mccarterathome for information.
