The Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn will present “The Outsider” from Jan. 24 to Feb. 18.

In a rare show of bipartisan cooperation, eight New Jersey governors — past, present and future — taped comedic bits for a two-minute ad promoting “The Outsider,” a political satire that will make its East Coast premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn from Jan. 24 to Feb. 18. You can watch the ad below.

According to the theater’s web site, the play, written by Paul Slade Smith (“Unnecessary Farce”), is about Ned Newley, a “complete unknown, with no political instincts and a paralyzing fear of public speaking,” who “is unexpectedly thrust into the position of Governor.”

“I think he’s a tool of the teachers’ union, that’s my guess,” says Gov. Christie, in the ad.

“Ned Newley, isn’t that the guy who Christie called numbnuts?” asks Phil Murphy.

Also appearing in the ad are former governors Christine Todd Whitman, Jim McGreevey, Tom Kean, Jon Corzine, Don DiFrancesco and Richard Codey.

Lenny Wolpe, whose Broadway credits include “Wicked” and “The Drowsy Chaperone,” plays Newley, and is joined in the cast by Julia Duffy (Emmy-nominated for “Newhart”), Manoel Felciano (Tony-nominated for “Sweeney Todd”), Kelley Curran, Mike Houston, Burke Moses and Erin Noel Grennan.
