NJPAC’s annual Horizon Foundation Summer in the City series of free outdoor concerts returns this summer with artists including hip-hop group Digital Underground (“The Humpty Dance,” “Doowutchyalike”), R&B and Latin-pop singer Brenda K. Starr (“I Still Believe,” “What You See Is What You Get”), Naughty by Nature rapper Treach, the Dazz Band and others.
As has been the Sounds of the City tradition, shows will take place Thursday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. on Chambers Plaza in front of NJPAC’s main entrance. In addition to the headliners, NJPAC arts education students, up-and-coming-artists and DJs will also perform.
Food and drinks will be available from food trucks and NJPAC’s restaurant, NICO Kitchen + Bar.
Digital Underground broke up in 2008 and leader Shock G died in 2021. Group member Money-B appeared as himself, though, in the 2017 Tupac Shakur biopic “All Eyez on Me,” with Chris Clarke as Shock G, and the two have continued to perform since then as Digital Underground.
Here is a schedule for the series’ headliners:
July 14: Felix Hernandez’s Rhythm Revue Dance Party
July 21: Digital Underground
July 28: Brenda K. Starr
Aug. 4: Treach
Aug. 11: Jon B.
Aug. 18: Milo Z
Aug. 25: Dazz Band
