Panel will discuss what makes New Brunswick rock

by JAY LUSTIG

The New Brunswick music scene, past and present, will be the subject of a panel discussion taking place Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Alexander Library at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Participants will include Smithereens drummer Dennis Diken, journalist Bob Makin, Sharief Hobley of the band Sharief in Burgundy, Audrey Rose of the band The Wichts, and Andrew Spina, who owns the New Brunswick record store Spina Records.

The discussion was organized by the library’s New Brunswick Music Scene Archive in conjunction with the Hub City Sounds: ROCK New Brunswick. This festival will feature a variety of events from Sept. 8 to 10, including a free concert at Boyd Park, Sept. 10, at which Sharief in Burgundy and other groups such as Hub City Stompers, Killer Shrimp, Nalani & Sarina, the Anderson Council and Cook Thugless will perform.

Frank Bridges, who oversees the library with Christie Lutz, said “when Christie and I set the panels up we try to put together a variety of voices over a variety of eras so that we can have an engaging and informative discussion about the New Brunswick music scene — especially as it pertains to the archive and the work we are doing. We are super excited about this year’s panel because it ties more into the community by being a part of ROCK New Brunswick weekend.”

Free parking for the panel discussion (for those not affiliated with the university) will be available in the College Avenue Parking Deck, Lot 26, and Lot 30.
