Bruce Springsteen, who has previously played songs by the late David Bowie and the late Glenn Frey, in tribute to them, on his current River Tour, did the same for the late Prince tonight, opening his E Street Band concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn with Prince’s “Purple Rain.”
Springsteen also reportedly dedicated the concert to Prince, who died in Thursday at the age of 57, and said Prince was the best performer he ever saw.
The arena was bathed in purple light.
In another kind of tribute, “Saturday Night Live” announced that tonight’s show would be devoted to clips featuring or related to Prince.
“Purple Rain” was released in 1984, the same year Springsteen’s Born in the USA album boosted his popularity exponentially.
Here is a great clip of Springsteen singing “Purple Rain” shot by my friend Stan Goldstein. Nils Lofgren does a great job with the guitar solo, just like you would expect.
