Robert Christgau in “The Last Critic.”
Robert Christgau — the music critic whose concise, reference-filled, sometimes convoluted and often strongly opinionated style has delighted and infuriated readers for decades — is profiled in the new documentary “The Last Critic,” and will participate in a question-and-answer session following a Montclair Film Festival screening of it at the Clairidge theater, Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m.
Appearing along with him will be his wife, the writer Carola Dibbell; the film’s co-producer and editor Paul Lovelace; and journalist Joe Levy, who also co-produced the film.
There will also be a second screening, Oct. 25 at 3:30 at the same theater, with a question-and-answer session featuring only Lovelace.
Christgau started writing about music in the ’60s and is best known for his work for The Village Voice, though he also has written for many other publications. He is now in his 80s and still writing.
Reviewing the film for Variety, Owen Gleiberman — a longtime music critic himself — described it as “captivating” as well as “a testament to everything a great critic is: a priest, a fan, an assassin, an aesthete, a merciless truth-teller, and a vessel of love.”
