The Doug Hall Trio & Friends, along with NJArts.net, will host Music Against Hunger, a fundraiser for Toni’s Kitchen, May 12 at 8 p.m. at Tierney’s Tavern in Montclair.
The trio — composed of Hall on keyboards and vocals, David Goldman on djembe and Bill Meyer on bass — hails from Montclair and nearby towns. The event will also feature accomplished local groups such as Big Mamou, The Reticents, Ira Siegel & Lenie Colacino, and The TriSonics. Siegel, who has worked on Broadway in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” and with artists including Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin, has regularly played guitar with the trio, and Iris Schaffer-Hall of The Reticents often sings with them.
The trio has created a vibrant scene with bi-monthly gigs at the Allegory restaurant in the MC Hotel in Montclair.
“We wanted to take some of the good energy surrounding The Doug Hall Trio’s bi-monthly gigs at the MC Hotel and give back to the community by helping in the fight against food insecurity,” Hall said.
The MC gigs create a communal, festive mood that I expect will be repeated at Tierney’s, with the additional feature of space for guests to dance.
Suggested donation at the door is $20. All proceeds will benefit Toni’s Kitchen, a food ministry that provides healthy food to individuals and families in need.
