CARLOS VARELA
Jackson Browne has confirmed that he will perform at the politically outspoken Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela’s May 16 concert at The Victoria Theater at NJPAC in Newark. For tickets, visit ticketmaster.com.
The show had originally been scheduled for Nov. 21, as part of last year’s TD James Moody Jazz Festival, but was postponed because of visa issues. (Tickets from the November show will be honored.) It was not immediately known if Browne would still be performing on the new date, but Browne confirmed it in a post to social media today.
Singer-songwriter Diana Fuentes and poet Rodrigo Toscano will also perform.
In a press release for the original show, Browne was described as “A longtime friend and fan of Carlos Varela.”
Browne translated and covered Varela’s “Muros y Puertas” as “Walls and Doors” on his 2014 album Standing in the Breach, with Varela playing guitar and singing backing vocals. Browne sings in this song:
It’s how it’s always been
And I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
Let me say that again
Because I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
