Paul Giamatti and Julianne Moore co-star in “The Debut,” which will be shown at this year’s Montclair Film Festival.
The Montclair Film Festival has announced its full schedule, with Rachel Maddow, Paul Giamatti, Julianne Moore, Jesse Eisenberg and others added to the list of those planning to make appearances.
The participation of Stephen Colbert, Ava DuVernay, Tony Gilroy and others was confirmed in an earlier announcement.
Maddow, the producer of “Kill. Bury. Print,” and Ben Klein, the film’s director, will receive the festival’s David Carr Award for Truth in Non-Fiction Filmmaking and participate in a question-and-answer session after a screening of the film at The Wellmont Theater, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. The film explores a 2023 conflict between a small newspaper and county officials in a sparsely populated area of Oklahoma. Eisenberg, the writer, director and co-star of “The Debut,” will join co-stars Giamatti and Moore in a discussion moderated by Colbert following a screening of the film at Montclair Kimberley Academy Upper School, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Moore plays a suburban New Jersey housewife who auditions for a role in a community theater musical, and lands it. The musical’s demanding director is played by Giamatti; Eisenberg plays another actor in the musical. (watch trailer below)
Other festival participants, and their movies, will include John Turturro (“The Only Living Pickpocket in New York”), Edward Burns (“Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies”), Susie Essman (“The Good Life”) and Tim Blake Nelson (“The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd”). Subjects for panel discussions will include “Who Gets to Make Movies Now? New Paths, New Voices” and “Art Can Save Our Democracy: How Creativity Can Be a Force for Good.”
The festival is scheduled for Oct. 16-25.
