‘Sweet Georgia Brown,’ Bucky and John Pizzarelli

John and Bucky Pizzarelli.

John and Bucky Pizzarelli.

I’ve already included a John Pizzarelli song in the 350 Jersey Songs series (“I Like Jersey Best,” naturally). And I’ve included a performance by his father, Bucky Pizzarelli, too (“C Jam Blues,” with Les Paul and Tal Farlow). But I came across the TV clip below and couldn’t resist adding it, as well.

I don’t know what the show is, or what year the clip is from (though I’d guess early 1980s). Whatever its origin, it’s just an amazingly dextrous guitar duet on the jazz standard, “Sweet Georgia Brown.” The two seem to be reading each other’s minds, as only family members can, throughout.

(UPDATE: The TV clip is no longer available online, so I have substituted a studio recording of the same song.)

Bucky, 89, and John, 55, are both still actively performing (though only rarely playing together). Among Bucky’s upcoming appearances is his annual “Guitar Summit” (with Frank Vignola, Vinny Raniolo and Ed Laub) at the free Morristown Jazz and Blues Festival, Saturday at Morristown Green.

New Jersey celebrated its 350th birthday in 2014. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we marked the occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, from September 2014 to September 2015 — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. To see the entire list, click here.
