Light of Day roundup: Stone Pony introduces The Weeklings; ‘Anything Anything’ (and everything) at Asbury Lanes

Last month, Glen Burtik received the Living Legend award at the Asbury Music Awards at the Stone Pony. And yesterday, he was back at the Pony with a new band. He’s not exactly resting on his legendary status, is he? The band is The Weeklings, and they were previewing songs from their debut album, titled First Album, due out March 10. Light of Day expands with rocking unplugged Montclair show

You know an unplugged show is going well when the acoustic guitar-wielding performers keep rising out of their chairs, to be able to sing a little more forcefully, or strum their guitars with a little more emphasis, or share a mic with another performer, or just move around a little. And that’s what happened, repeatedly, during Saturday night’s Light of Day concert at the Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair, which featured Garland Jeffreys, Willie Nile, James Maddock, Steve Conte and Joe D’Urso. These are singer-songwriters, but also rock ‘n’ rollers at heart, and despite the unplugged format, this show was electrifying from start to finish. It was the first Light of Day concert to take place in northern New Jersey in the charity concert series’ 15-year history, and a sort of prelude to the festival itself, which takes place throughout this week, mostly in Asbury Park. Light of Day update: Many more acts confirmed; online auction; photo exhibit

Dozens of artists — including Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens, Disappear Fear, Guy Davis, Badly Drawn Boy, Cats on a Smooth Surface, Jen Chapin, Greg Trooper, Will Lee and Anton Fig, Anthony D’Amato and former BoDeans member Sam Llanas — have been added to the Light of Day festival, taking place at various venues in Asbury Park, Montclair, Burlington and New York City (though mostly in Asbury Park), Jan. 9-19. Founded by artist manager Bob Benjamin of Highland Park, who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, Light of Day has raised about $2.5 million for research about Parkinson’s Disease and related illnesses in its first 14 years. Light of Day update: Willie Nile, LaBamba, Ben Arnold and more


There are still more additions to be announced, but the lineups for the Light of Day benefit shows scheduled for Jan. 9 to 19 throughout New Jersey are being solidified. Events will take place mostly in Asbury Park, though there are also shows in Montclair, Burlington and New York.
