A trip back in time with ‘Jimmy Durante and Friends’

Fans of New Jersey jazz know that Grover Kemble, a mainstay of the state’s jazz scene for decades, can sing well. But now we also know that he can sing well out of the corner of his mouth, in a sandpaper rasp. Kemble has put together a Jimmy Durante tribute show, “Jimmy Durante and Friends,” that is being presented at the Parsippany Playhouse this weekend, and he is planning to continue presenting it at other locations in the future. Thankful for long career, Ian Hunter will perform in Parsippany, Friday


The night Ian Hunter turned 75, June 3 of this year, he was onstage at the City Winery in New York, at a concert billed as his Diamond Jubilee Birthday Bash. “It was great,” says the former frontman of the British band Mott the Hoople, “but I’m not good at that kind of that thing. I didn’t know what to do in those kinds of situations.” Hunter, who lives in Connecticut, will be in New Jersey the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28, for a show with his Rant Band at the Mount Tabor Tabernacle in Parsippany.
