Tenth anniversary party for HomeGrownRadioNJ

The band Yarn will help the internet radio station HomeGrownNJ.org celebrate its 10th anniversary, Oct. 26 in Boonton.

Everyone complains about the radio, but very few people are doing anything about it. In New Jersey, one of the beacons of hope is HomeGrownRadioNJ.org, which follows, 24 hours a day, the kind of free-form format that a mainstream station would only play overnights and on weekends, if at all.

As I’m listening right now, Matthew Sweet’s “We’re the Same” is seguing into The Band’s “Katie’s Been Gone.” In a press release, the station describes its programming as “from Mozart to Zappa, Scottish to Horror, Bowie to Ellington and beyond.” Included in the “beyond,” I guess, is the local Jersey talent that the station features regularly.

Founded in Marksboro (Warren County) and now based in Boonton, HomeGrownRadioNJ.org will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a Mini Music Fest, Oct. 26, with sets by Yarn, the Hawk Owls, the Nadine LaFond Band, Fish House Road, Small Town Sheiks, Maribyrd, Late Night Kennel Club and the Meg Beattie & Billy Tanglewood duo.

(Buddy Guy’s “Where Is the Next One Coming From” is playing now, by the way.)

The show begins at 1 p.m. at the Boonton Elks Lodge, and will feature vendors, food by Hoboken Eddie’s, and a cash bar. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 day of show, with children 12 and younger admitted free.

(Up now, on the station, is The Velvet Underground “Candy Says.” Just try hearing that anywhere else on airwaves. Not impossible, of course. But not likely.)
