I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say one of the greatest lineups of New Jersey roots musicians ever assembled for one show will be coming together at Crossroads in Garwood on Sun., Oct. 1, for Jay’s Jersey Jams, Vol. 1, a benefit for NJArts.net.
If you are a fan of the state’s roots scene, you probably already know just how great artists such as The Shockenaw Mountain Boys (featuring members of Railroad Earth), Tony Trischka, Barry Mitterhoff, Kinderhook and Lisa Bouchelle are. If not, just check out some of the videos I’ve assembled below.
Vol. 1 in the series took place in March 2016, and featured Pat DiNizio, Richard Barone, The Grip Weeds, The Weeklings, The Porchistas, Loretta Hagen and many others. The upcoming event (primarily organized by NJArts.net contributor Tom Skevin) is, like that one, essential to the survival of NJArts.net, which recently celebrated its third anniversary.
Here is the show’s schedule, subject to change:
6 p.m.: Geoff Doubleday
6:30 p.m.: Marvin Sunk
7:10 p.m.: Lisa Bouchelle
7:55 p.m.: Kinderhook
8:50 p.m.: Barry Mitterhoff
9:25 p.m.: Tony Trischka
10:15 p.m.: The Shockenaw Mountain Boys
And here are videos by all the artists:
An NJTV “State of the Arts” feature on The Shockenaw Mountain Boys:
Tony Trischka’s “Great Big World”
Barry Mitterhoff performing “Trouble in Mind” with Jorma Kaukonen and Larry Campbell at the 2012 “Love for Levon” Levon Helm tribute concert at the Izod Center in East Rutherford
The video for Kinderhook’s 2014 single “Run, Boy, Run” …
… and a performance at the Capitol Theater in Passaic in 1977, when the band was still known as Kinderhook Creek
Lisa Bouchelle’s “Only the Tequila Talkin’ ” duet with John Popper (of Blues Traveler), co-written by Bouchelle and John Eddie
Marvin Sunk’s “Patchwork Salad”
Geoff Doubleday’s “Tired of This Town”
And, finally, here’s a promotional video generously made and donated by George Falkowski:
